EIS MEDICAL BULLETIN #4: SWINE FLU

EIS MEDICAL BULLETIN #4: SWINE FLU

by Dr Rod Jaques, EIS Director of Medical Services – 26.06.09

The English Institute of Sport (EIS) are monitoring the situation around ‘swine flu’ closely:

• A suspected case of swine flu in a funded athlete has been reported

• Internationally there have been 55,000 plus cases confirmed, with 238 deaths, still making the mortality rate less than 0.005%

• In the UK confirmed cases are approaching 300.

• Suspected cases should go to their Family GP and not come to the EIS.

• As with any national medical concern, we are obliged to respond to the advice from the Department of Health on Swine Flu. Depending on the local Public Department of Health advice, tests may or may not be done and treatment started.

• Case contacts will be advised by the local Public Health Department and not through the EIS.

• The Public Health Departments will advise contacts on the need to stay away from public facilities such as the EIS.

• If in any doubt, please stay away from the EIS until you have discussed your symptoms with your family GP

We will update this bulletin in due course.
